Our Wheel Balancing Machines
There are five key types of wheel balancer, and we offer them all at Tyre Bay Direct. Each design has its advantages and some will be better suited to you than others. To help you decide which ones to focus on, we’ve outlined the differences below:
- Manual Data Input: A manual data input wheel balancer is just that: all wheel parameters (including rim width, diameter and offset) are entered by hand. There will be a selection of buttons on the front of the machine which will enable you to enter the parameters. The machine will often also come with a retractable measuring arm for the offset. The diameter can then be determined by the tyre size and a pair of measuring callipers will give you the ability to measure the wheel width.
- Semi-Automatic: With a semi-automatic wheel balancer, you still need to enter the wheel width by hand, but the retractable ruler will then automatically sense and input the offset and rim diameter. As with a manual model, you will still need to use measuring callipers for the wheel width and enter this through buttons on the machine.
- Automatic: A fully automatic wheel balancer will capture all three of these parameters itself. Again, the measuring arm of the wheel balancer will pick up the offset and diameter but on a fully automatic machine, there will be an additional measuring arm, normally attached to the protective hood. This arm can be brought across to take the wheel width measurement, which is automatically entered into the machine.
- Motorcycle: Expecting to work on motorcycles as well as cars? You don’t need to buy a specialised machine – these products can handle both. All you need is one of our motorcycle adapters, which will allow your chosen wheel balancer to accept motorcycle wheels. View our motorcycle garage equipment.
- Trucks, Buses & Commercial Vehicles: Commercial vehicles are bigger and heavier than cars – and so are their wheels and tyres. This means that a unique type of balancer is required. Typically, commercial vehicle balancers feature built-in lifts to aid in the mounting of heavy truck wheels, and are larger to accommodate wider and taller rims.

Fully Automatic vs. Semi-Automatic vs. Manual
What is the difference between automatic and manual wheel balancing? To balance a wheel the machine needs 3 main parameters. The offset, which is the distance the wheel is away from the machine, the wheel diameter, which is the diameter of the rim on which the tyre is fitted and the width of the wheel being balanced. Only with these parameters entered accurately into the machine can it carry out the wheel balancing procedure and these are the differences between the types of machine:
| Manual Data Input | A manual data input wheel balancer is just that; all parameters are entered by hand. There will be a selection of buttons on the front of the machine which will enable you to enter the parameters. The machine will often also come with a retractable measuring arm for the offset. The diameter can then be determined by the tyre size and a pair of measuring callipers will give you the ability to measure the wheel width. An example machine here would be the Redback 800 24″ manual data input wheel balancer. |
| Semi-Automatic Data Input | With a semi-automatic wheel balancer there is still a need to enter the wheel width by hand. The retractable ruler will then automatically sense and input the offset and rim diameter, but you will still use measuring callipers for the wheel width and enter this through buttons on the machine. You might choose a machine like the Atlas WB50 Semi-Automatic Wheel Balancer if this is your requirement. |
| Fully Automatic Data Input | A fully automatic wheel balancer will capture all 3 of these parameters. Again, the measuring arm of the wheel balancer will pick up the offset and diameter but on a fully automatic machine, there will be an additional measuring arm, normally attached to the protective hood. This arm can be brought across to take the wheel width measurement which is automatically entered into the machine. Typically, you’d be looking at an Atlas Platinum PWB90 Fully-automatic Wheel Balancer, or perhaps a Hofmann Megaplan megaspin 220 Wheel Balancer. |
Assuming the correct data is entered, it’s important to note that balancing accuracy is not affected by the way the data is collected. The main advantage gained with a fully automatic balancer is the speed with which you can balance wheels.
